Q: I have a few questions hopefully you can help me with regarding my Fafner bass head.

First let me say (as I know many have said before me) that this is the most superb bass head that I have ever owned (20+ years), period.

It truly is an instrument with its own voice and is very well suited to my '64 Fender jazz bass, and I have never found a bass cabinet that I can't make work with this head, but I have few questions for you:

1) I bought this head about 3 years ago and have never had it serviced. I was wondering if and what I should have done to it given its age, in particular tube replacement.

2) Assuming I replace the tube, how different can I expect the amp to sound? I always hear about how tubes are "unique" and I would hate to do anything that would cause me to have to "search" for my sound within the amp again. Should I be worried?

3) Are there different types of tubes that could be used (low grade, high grade) or are they all the same?

A:
1) If you don't experience any problems with your Fafner head, there is really no need to be concerned.

Anyhow, eventually you'll need to replace the tube as in every tube amp, although a preamp tube may work perfectly for many, many years.

2) When you replace the tube, be aware of that your sound may change, so try replacing with same brand if possible.

Yet, many of the tube brands that were available a couple of years ago are not available today due to various reasons - trade embargos, closing of plants etc.etc.

3) If you wish to experiment with your sound it could be worth the effort of changing brand and type to e.g. a high-grade tube. It's really up to your personal taste.

  EBS FAFNER

Q: Is the EBS Fafner all tube?

A: No. The EBS Fafner has got an ECC831 tube in the pre-amp section, with special "Drive" and "Character" controls where you can choose how much tube drive you want for your sound.

Q: Does the SPEAKON connector on the Fafner head use pins 1+/1- or pins 2+/2- for connections to a speaker cabinet?

A: The Fafner uses both 1+/1- and 2+/2- for speaker connection. Normally, only the 1+/1- pair is used.

Q: I'm interested in the Fafner bass head but have a question about its output: What is the output of the head in RMS when the ohm load is 8 ohms?

I am about to purchase a Fafner, and want to be sure that it will be loud enough for me needs, using an 8 ohm cabinet.

A: The Fafner is not really designed to be used with only one 8 ohms cabinet.

At least you should be able load it with at least 4 ohms, since the RMS output at 8 ohms would only be around 230 W RMS.

Still, the Fafner plays relatively loud at that impedance, even though the figures may tell differently.

Q: Have there been any changes to the design or enhancements to the Fafner line since I purchased mine a couple of years ago?

Is it worth upgrading to the latest & greatest?

A: The latest update on the Fafner was the release of the Fafner TD, also called "blue Fafner" among a lot of people.

The big difference here is that you can boost the Drive section about 100% additionally.

Furthermore, you'll find some other enhancements as well.

Still it's the same amp, same preamp, same poweramp - i.e. a Fafner.

Q: I am the happiest owner of Fafner head and EBS cabs.

I am looking for EBS effects, and I would like to know if the phantom power is able to power
the effects loop?

A: By default, on the Fafner, the phantom power option for the loop is not activated.

Note that not all pedals can be fed through this option, and only the last one in the chain can be powered.

Q: Will the Fafner work fine with a 4 ohm and 8 ohm cabinet?

A: Yes, indeed!
